Dateline Chicago 1981:

I was eighteen years old and driving a taxi. You had to be at least twenty-five to drive for Yellow Cab, but I had a fake license. In those days it was very easy to get a fake license. The Illinois Licenses didn’t have a picture on them in those days! Even at the time I knew that was a dumb idea. All we did was put some white-out on our birth certificate and take a copy. When I was driving over-the-road, every once in a while I would hear or see truckers deal drugs to each other. Sometimes I would hear them on the CB talking about a girl named Lucille. Did you ever see a crazy driver and wish you could just snatch them out of their car and shake them? I have. Did you ever see another driver do something stupid and then flip you “the bird” as if it were your fault? I have. Do you know one of these drivers and wonder how they survive every day? Me too. Don’t you wish you could do something about it? I sure do.

As a longtime trucker myself, I’ve taken some heavy loads down some big hills, or so I thought. Like the very first time I ever went down Cabbage (westbound I-84 heading down into Pendleton, OR).
